From Fleece to Yarn--A Family Spinning Adventure

What You'll do:

• Introduction to Fibers: Our class begins with an engaging story that may spark young minds' interest and explores several types of natural fibres, emphasising their origins and environmental implications.

• If you participated in our prior sheep shearing activity on the farm, you will have a greater understanding of the wool growth process and how to make more sustainable decisions in your daily life.

​

• Interactive Fiber Exploration: Touch, feel, and explore various fibers through interactive displays. Children can see and understand where each type of fibre originates from, which fosters a stronger connection to the natural world and the products they use.

​

• Basic Carding Demonstration: Witness the transformation of raw wool into aligned fibers ready for spinning. 

​

• Spinning Your Own Yarns: We recommend that children under the age of 13 use drop spindles for simple spinning (the process of converting carded wool into yarn), allowing them to make their own piece of yarn to take home. Parents can engage with traditional Ashford spinning wheels provided by the studio, with children participating under supervision.​

• Educational and Sustainable:  Beyond just crafting, this workshop emphasizes the importance of sustainable practices within the textile industry. It’s crafted to inspire both kids and adults to appreciate and advocate for sustainable fashion.​
